The Teepee Kiln With Janet Smith & Maureen Alison

Start Date: Monday 30 September 2024

Venue: 1903 Square, Nelson, Nelson / Tasman

Time: Starts at 08:00am

Restrictions: All Ages

Join us for an enriching workshop where we'll construct a Teepee Kiln, tailored for firing low-temperature bisque pots. Using materials like copper carbonate, yellow ochre, and seaweed, we'll imbue our pottery with a charming spectrum of colours and textures. Wrapping selected pots in tinfoil, banana skins, and seaweed, we'll create a distinctive ambiance within the kiln. Crafted from paper clay or slip-soaked sheets, the kiln itself will offer ideal firing conditions. Strategically placing charcoal and sawdust to impart unique blackened areas, we'll carefully tend the firebox, nurturing the flames until the main chamber ignites.

Join us for an unforgettable exploration of the ancient craft of kiln firing!

Please note: The venue for this workshop will be announced closer to the date. Long-time friends Janet and Maureen have been making pots and firing together for over 30 years and are absolute legends in the game. Janet has an impressive selection of kilns on her property, including a large Anagama, and is currently in the process of building another wood/oil/gas salt kiln.
