Get ready for the ultimate weekend of Blues and BBQ in Rotorua November 29th to December 1st, 2024 Two renowned New Zealand blues bands have been announced as headliners for the highly anticipated annual New Zealand Blues and BBQ Festival in Rotorua. With a career spanning four decades, “Sir” Midge Marsden (MNZM) is a living legend in the Kiwi blues scene. His energetic performances and masterful guitar skills have captivated audiences around the world, including four US tours. In 2006, Marsden was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to music, a testament to his talent and passion for blues. The second headline act is known for their dynamic fusion of blues, rock, and psychedelic sounds. The Human Instinct has been a staple in the New Zealand music scene since the late 1960s. Their electrifying performances always leave audiences wanting more. Original band member Maurice Greer shows he’s still got what it takes on lead vocals and drums. This popular event is produced by the BOP Blues Club Inc based in Rotorua. Their mission is to celebrate and promote the rich and diverse world of blues music, bringing together top talent and passionate fans from across the nation. Adding to the festive atmosphere, local pit masters and winners of the “Cooks on Fire” TV show, Black Label Barbecue, will be back again this year. Shaun and Alia entered the world of competitive barbecue in 2018, stacking up numerous trophies across low and slow, and hot and fast categories. Last year, their food was such a fan favourite, they sold out. Black Label Barbecue won’t be the only smoky, savoury and sweet BBQ masters on site. This festival is a true paradise for BBQ lovers, providing the opportunity to check out New Zealand’s best pitmasters as they compete in two internationally sanctioned BBQ competitions. While these teams are cooking purely for the judges, there will be many delicious vendors covering your favourite hot & fast and traditional low & slow barbecue. For those wanting to up their own BBQ game, there will be a range of BBQ-related retailers ready with deals, and a schedule of demonstrations, tastings, and classes over the festival weekend. Blues music is a genre with deep roots and a rich history, originating from African American communities in the Deep South of the United States in the late 19th century. It has evolved over the years, giving rise to various sub-genres such as Delta blues, Chicago blues, Texas blues, and more. Each style brings its unique flavour, making blues a universally appealing genre that resonates with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Festival goers will experience the raw emotion and powerful performances of some of the best blues artists in Aotearoa. The event is family-friendly fun with a range of activities for all ages, making it a perfect weekend getaway for families. Mark your calendars for a weekend filled with soul-stirring blues music and mouth-watering BBQ delights. Tickets will be available from Tuesday, 30 July, at Moshtix.
