The mesmerising Deva Mahal announces tour

Wednesday 21 September 2022

The incomparable Deva Mahal has today announced a four-date New Zealand tour, which will mark the highly-anticipated release of her new EP, FUTURE CLASSIC: VOL 1 – CLASSIC.

Presented by Eccles Entertainment, Deva and her full band will perform at the MTG in Napier on Friday, November 4; the Wintergarden at The Civic in Auckland on Saturday, November 5; St James in Wellington on Friday, November 11 and the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch on Saturday, November 12.

Unequivocally one of Aotearoa’s most astounding recording and touring artists, Deva is set to release a new single in the lead up to the tour. ‘Run Me Through’ is out October 7, giving fans a taste of what’s to come on FUTURE CLASSIC: VOL 1 – CLASSIC (EP to be released November 4). And of course, a sneak peek of her new live show.

“Every opportunity to share and to connect with an audience is a gift that I deeply respect and hold dearly to my heart,” says Deva.

“In these challenging times where artists are finding it harder to cultivate space for their work, I am honoured to step on that stage and share my music with Aotearoa.

“This will be an evening of original music that is full of passion and grit. Beauty and strength. Timeless. Unafraid to be raw and speaks of pain and triumph. Informed by heartbreaking challenges but, never taking its eye off of hope.”

Having graced stages at iconic venues and festivals around the world, from the Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall; and the Byron Bay Blues Festival to the Montreal Jazz Fest; Deva’s mastery of her craft and generosity of soul are unparalleled. With her debut album 2018’s RUN DEEP, and a string of winning singles, including Silver Scroll Finalist ‘Stand In’ (2020); ‘Sister’ feat. Zoe Moon (2021); and ‘Goddamn’ feat. Son Little (2019) Deva stands out as a gifted songwriter, producer and a once in a lifetime voice.

It also signals the magic of what’s still to be revealed in the upcoming FUTURE CLASSIC: VOL 1 – CLASSIC.

Deva gives a sneak insight into what we can expect to hear on the EP… “The beauty and many colours of a black woman’s soul. Exploring the themes of duality, sexuality, racism, sorrow, love, strength, growth and perseverance.

“Imagine Michael Kiwanuka meets The Alabama Shakes meets Mereba Meets Otis Redding meets Aretha Franklin. A record that allows me to showcase and share the many different sides to my creativity and doesn’t require me to put my music or the listener to be put in a box. A record that also makes space for other BIPOC women to be uplifted in an intensely male dominated industry.

The EP is released on Friday November 4, the same date as Deva’s live tour kicks off.

Be prepared to be dazzled this November. If there is one show you need to experience, it is Deva Mahal live!
