Profile: Sophie-Maude - Making an Impression

Friday 05 March 2021

There is no doubt that when you meet Sophie-Maude, you are left with a lasting impression. Her self-professed quirkiness, honest and out-going nature and angelic voice will filter through to your very core.

Able to suit many genres, she can sing soft, sultry jazzy numbers one minute and then belt out the high notes from Christina Aguilera the next. Sophie’s passion for singing has been born out of a need for dealing with the emotional challenges faced through being on the autistic spectrum and as an escape from the physical stressors of Tourette Syndrome.

Home schooled from a young age, her days have been filled with music, song writing and acting, allowing the expression of emotions and living a life through others.

Sophie’s break came when she was spotted by Manager Ash Rogers last December. She officially became the first signing of the Waxy Rails Label – an Ethical record label based in Mount Maunganui whose mission it is to Support young musicians and help them showcase their talent to the world.

With support from Ash and producer Desio Gelinkski and Tiki Taane, Sophie released her first single ‘Insane’ in December last year and held her first gig at the Jam Factory which was a sell-out. She is now collaborating with Joseph Thompson from Joseph and Maia, working towards her next releases.

You can hear Sophie-Maude and her band at her next gig on 12 March at Tauranga Musical Theatre, alongside two other talented local artists.
