.Live & Local: Honest Liars
Monday 09 March 2020
For many, their first taste of improvisational theatre was with the US TV show ‘Whose Line is It Anyway?’ – but improv has its root dating back to the BC times.
The great thing it’s all about laughter and having a good time, which is why Honest Liars formed and have been tickling funny bones ever since. We caught up with the comedy group for our Live & Local. If you want to see them for yourself, they host a performance at The Jam Factory ever first Sunday of the month ($10 entry).
Hi team, how are you today?!
A box of fluffy ducks!
If you had to describe Honest Liars in one sentence, what would it be?
An unpredictable improvisational comedy troupe, ridiculously obsessed with entertaining.
What's the craziest thing that's ever happened at one of your shows?
Our shows are always crazy – that’s the nature of spur-of-the-moment audience-led storylines… but one of our recent shows had scenes featuring tall men greasing themselves up to fit in small racing cars, nuns doing witchcraft, and pregnant bogans in the Wild West.
Why do you think improv is so much fun? What do you enjoy about it?
We love it because we love the challenge of never knowing what is about to happen, just like the people who attend our shows. We love interacting with our audience – it’s a team effort, them and us, and we create the show together. Every night is different. No script, just flying by the seat of our pants!
When you're not performing with your own group, what kind of performances do you like to go to? What was one you have seen recently?
We love all forms of the performing arts and have awe for all artists. Recently we’ve been seeing some fabulous art and theatre coming out of The Incubator at the Historic Village in Tauranga. Great local talent.
What are some of your favorite things to do in the Bay?
We love the creativity in Tauranga, so you’ll see us going to events all over the place – concerts, shows, and maybe the occasional quiz night at The Good Home Coast or drinks at the Rain Bar in Papamoa.
