Joey Cape announces solo Auckland show

Wending his way to Aotearoa in February as guitarist for US all-star covers band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Joey Cape has announced a special solo headline performance at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammy Bar. Cape is co-founder and frontman of Cal-punk icons Lagwagon, who released a whopping nine studio albums and numerous other EPs, demos and compilations through Fat Wreck Chords, from 1992's Duh right up to 2019's Railer — foisting upon the world such beloved anthems as 'May 16' and 'Violins'. The veteran punk songwriter's prolific solo career encompasses six studio long players and a slew of single / split releases, including 2021's acoustic guitar wielding (and aptly titled) A Good Year to Forget. Set to land in Aotearoa at the start of 2023 as part of Me First And The Gimme Gimmes' tour down under, Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape will also headline his own intimate show at Auckland's Whammy Bar, Sunday 19 February.

Joey wrote and recorded a beautiful record during lockdown called 'A Good Year To Forget’ released via Fat Wreck Chords late 2021. A tug at the heartstrings album that not only expands Cape’s sonic palette, Cape delves deeper than he has before into themes of blistering adversity, loss and grief.

Joey Cape’s solo shows will wax poetic on his own personal tragedies. According to Fat's website, Cape’s album was written during a year that saw him lose his father, separate from his wife of 20 years, contract COVID and move back in with his parents as a result of a livelihood lost.”
