Getting to know "Skram" - educators, influences and summer shows
Tuesday 20 December 2022
We've loved seeing Skram's journey this year including loads of airplay on JuiceTV. With impending summer shows and a new single and video we took the opportunity to get the know the Skram lads a bit better.
How do you think the fact you’ve all come from different parts of NZ has added to the flavour of the band.
Every time we write together it feels like there are a million different influences, flavours and voices in the room. It kinda feels like mixing together amazing tastes and trying things from a myriad of different angles and perspectives all of the time. We’re all very different but we’re so connected in a heartfelt way so we’re able to communicate our ideas to each other really effectively.
Education is a big part of some of your day jobs, are your students ready to leverage off your future fame!
Haha! This is a really fun question. A lot of us are educators. I’m not sure if they want to leverage our success, mostly because younger students tend to be quite positive and not super cunning or anything. It’s exciting talking about Skram with students because it feels like we can really encourage our students and help them get an idea of what to expect in the industry. It also feels like they can really get a good idea of where to start their careers if they want to. We all want the same thing as musicians - so the more we can help each other, especially through education - the better.
Outside of music what’s important to you?
We all love food! We also all love to hang out, play board games and video games, go to the beach and swim and soak up the epic summer sun, and just generally have fun. We all really enjoy listening to and being a part of big music events so we’re really lucky.
Tell us about your respective family’s relationship to music?
This is a complicated question to answer because there are so many of us on the team and there are various backgrounds at play.
Henry: My grandmother was a ballet dancer, which I think had a pretty emotional impact on me. My father loves music and bought me my first guitar, and my mother loves Shania Twain and Anastacia which really influenced my musical upbringing. My family loves music and Dad plays guitar and Bass.
Conall: My family has always been musical - my parents were both in musical theatre, and both of my sisters were in bands when I was growing up, so we all love it!
Tane: Both my parents are musicians. My mum and grandparents were performing gigs in Aussie while she was pregnant with me! My Koko pretty much taught me the bass and my dad is a musician in the Royal Air Force.
All-time greatest musical influences?
Henry: Harry Styles, Tash Sultana, Coldplay
Felix: Nile, Kaki King
Tane: Toto, Michael Jackson
Conall: Muse, Coheed and Cambria, Walk The Moon
Where do you see the music business going?
We want to tour the world, play to massive audiences and create an incredible show and music that can’t be ignored. We’re going to work as hard as we can every day to plan and make our shows amazing and get ourselves touring the planet ASAP.
What's next for you?
First we have the “Love Don’t Keep Me Waiting” EP, followed by Summer where we’re playing some epic shows - Summer In Waihi, Summer In Te-Whanga-Nui-A-Tara and Summer In Taranaki to name a few - Tickets are on sale from Ticket Fairy now!!! Following this we’ve got another incredible Album which really hits a new mark of oceanic sound for us, the releases for this Album will be a while away, but we’re excitedly planning away!
