Tracy Chapman's “Fast Car” takes country turn
Wednesday 19 July 2023
I've been on the road a bit the past couple of weeks and using the opportunity to tune into what's happening on radio. When programming JuiceTV I very rarely "check in" these days but it was great to hear some tracks I wasn't across.
Almost every station I tuned into was spinning Luke Comb's version of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car"
The song elicits a personal memory from my raido days as a "jock" on Dunedin's 4XO. I was spinning it for first time upon release in 1988 and mispronounced her name - "Chasey Trapman" came out of my 17 year old bumblings and it stuck, just couldn't say "Tracy Chapman".
I went searching for the video to add to JuiceTV playlist and couldn't believe there wasn't one. This has been partially addressed today with the release of a live official version filmed in May during a stop at Minneapolis’s U.S. Bank Stadium.
“Fast Car” appears on the North Carolina native’s latest album Gettin’ Old and the song’s ascent to Number One on the chart made Chapman the first ever Black woman songwriter to have a country chart-topper as the sole writer. “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,” Chapman told Billboad. “I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.’”
