Ed Sheeran misses Grandmother's Funeral due to ongoing Copyright Trial in New York
Thursday 04 May 2023
Ed Sheeran was unable to attend his grandmother's funeral in a small Irish village due to a copyright trial taking place in New York. Anne 'Nancy' Sheeran was laid to rest today, and Ed's father John mentioned his son's absence during the eulogy. John expressed sadness at Ed's inability to attend, noting that he was thousands of miles away defending his integrity in an American court. Although Ed missed the funeral, he was able to watch it online.
The trial revolves around claims that Ed used material from Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On to create his own song, Thinking Out Loud, a decade ago. Last week, Townsend attorney Ben Crump argued that a Zurich concert clip in which Ed can be heard moving between Let's Get It On and Thinking Out Loud was proof of copyright violation. Ed's attorney, Ilene Farkas, countered this by providing a mini-concert in court, showing how Ed would mash up songs with similar chords. The jury is currently deliberating on a verdict.
