Waitangi Day events in Tauranga!

Thursday 04 February 2021

Tauranga is set to host an exciting line up of music, sport and Waitangi Day events this long weekend, including the One Love Festival at Tauranga Domain on 6 and 7 February.

The festival, which is one of the biggest on the city’s annual events calendar, is sold out with around 18,500 attendees expected. To support safe operations for this event there will be a number of road closures in the CBD, including a section of Cameron Road. See map.

The city’s Waitangi Day commemorations will begin with a 6.30am dawn service at the base of Hopukiore (Mount Drury) on Saturday. Road closures will be in place on Marine Parade, between Grace Avenue and Pacific Avenue, from 5am until 9am on Saturday. The celebrations will continue at The Historic Village with the Tauranga Moana Waitangi Day Festival from 10am. This is a family-friendly event featuring Māori arts and cultural performances, live music, workshops, food trucks and much more!

Sports enthusiasts can head along to Mount Maunganui Main Beach on the Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the New Zealand Secondary Schools Beach Volleyball Championships. Or  check out the Midget and Sprint Car Special Event, that will bring BayPark Speedway to life on Saturday night.

Tauranga City Council’s General Manager of Community Services, Gareth Wallis, said council wanted to encourage residents and visitors to make the most of what the city has to offer this holiday weekend but also plan ahead.

“If you’re coming into the city, please take the time to familiarise yourself with the road closures and recommended routes so you can navigate easily through the city centre. And please remember to scan the COVID-19 QR tracer app codes if you are out and about.”

Mr Wallis said the weekend was shaping up to be a busy one and there was something for everyone to enjoy.

“We’ve been working closely with event organisers to continue to grow the city’s reputation as one of the county’s premiere event-friendly destinations. This collaborative approach is reflected in the great array of events scheduled across Tauranga this Waitangi weekend.”
