Waka unveiled
Saturday 27 June 2020
Saturday Morning saw the unveiling of ‘This is us - he waka eke noa’ an active art installation at the Village as part of Matariki.
One couldn't help think the Waka was launched just in time, as the Bay was experiencing torrential rain, thunder and lightning.
In a signal of approval from above the rain paused for an enthusiastic gathering of locals to mark the occasion.
A series of workshops is running during July in where the public can share stories of how they or their ancestors traveled to New Zealand.
Each participant is able to decorate a Waka paddle (hoe) which will then be on show at The Incubator in late August.
The project has been a collaboration between Tauranga Sunrise Rotary Club, Tauranga City Council, The Incubator Creative Hub and was designed and painted by locals Quinton Bidois and painted by Michelle Estall.
