Universal Music Group Completes $70 Million Acquisition of Thailand's Second-Largest Recordings Catalog, Signals More Deals Ahead
Universal Music Group (UMG) has finalized the acquisition of the remaining 30% of Thailand's RS Group recorded music catalog, bringing its total ownership to 100%. The deal, worth approximately USD $18 million with a potential additional bonus of USD $2 million, follows UMG's earlier acquisition of a 70% stake in the catalog for USD $45 million last year.
In total, UMG has now spent between USD $65-$70 million to fully acquire the catalog, which is Thailand’s second-largest. This move signals UMG’s continued focus on high-potential markets in Asia, with more mergers and acquisitions expected to follow.
UMG’s growing interest in the region was highlighted last year when MBW predicted further M&A activity after the initial 70% stake acquisition. With this latest deal completed, UMG is clearly ramping up its presence in Asia, eyeing additional opportunities for expansion in the region’s thriving music markets.
