SH2 resurfacing works continue
Tuesday 02 February 2021
The NZTA has advised that significant delays are expected this week along State Highway 2, with resurfacing work scheduled between Youngson Road and Barrett Road, near Omokoroa.
Nightworks will be undertaken on Tuesday, February 2 between 7pm and 7am. The site will be monitored on Wednesday, February 3 and Thursday, February 4, with temporary traffic management in place until the road surface has had a final sweep and road markings are reinstated.
Acting Bay of Plenty System Manager, Oliver Postings says while the delays are frustrating and inconvenient, particularly with school resuming for many this week, the team is working hard to minimise disruption by undertaking this work at night and implementing a detour route.
“We expect significant delays during the day due to the length of the site and the loose chip. These delays could be upwards of 60 minutes at peak times and we urge people to reconsider any unnecessary travel, if possible,” says Oliver.
To help manage the delays, all northbound light traffic will be detoured through Barrett Road, Old Highway and Youngson Road during peak hours.
The detour route is optional for southbound motorists and is unsuitable for heavy traffic.
Barrett Road, Old Highway and Youngson Road will have traffic management staff present during the diversion with a 50km/h temporary speed limit in place.
The works programme was extended due to wet weather earlier in the month.
“This is the final site in the NZTA spring/summer maintenance sealing programme for this section of SH2. The repairs and reseals ensure the safety and resilience of the state highway network,” says Oliver.
In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, work may be postponed. Visit the interactive NZTA Journey Planner website for the latest information on roadworks, traffic, road closures and detours to help plan your trip.
