Public feedback wanted for safety upgrade to Totara Street

In a recent Media Advisory, The Tauranga City Council is seeking urgent public feedback for a safety upgrade to a high volume street in the Mount.
“Plans for an urgent safety upgrade of Totara Street are open for public feedback.
Tauranga City Council is proposing to build a 3m-wide shared path at one end of Totara Street and a two-way cycleway at the other end to give people a safer cycling route.
People on bikes need to be separated from heavy vehicles as much as possible when they ride along Totara Street. Around 19,000 vehicles are driven along Totara Street each day, with up to 4,000 of those being heavy vehicles. Cycle counters show that well over 100,000 bike trips were made along Totara Street in 2019.”
The council is asking for feedback about the safety upgrade until Friday 7 August. Detailed plans have been published along with a survey at www.tauranga.govt.nz/totara.
Safety upgrade overview
• 3m-wide shared path between Hewletts Road and Kawaka Street, eastern side (Blake Park side).
• Two-way cycleway between Kawaka Street and Rata Street, western side (Port side).
• Signalised crossing at each end of the shared path.
• Upgrades to every intersection.
• New shared path on Rata Street connecting to Nikau Crescent/Coronation Park.
