'NO FAKES' Act Introduced in US Senate to Protect Against AI Deepfakes

A bipartisan group of US senators has introduced the Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe (NO FAKES) Act, aimed at combating AI deepfakes, including those involving music. The legislation establishes a federal property right over an individual’s voice and likeness, offering new protections for creators against misuse.

The bill, introduced by Senators Chris Coons, Amy Klobuchar, Marsha Blackburn, and Thom Tillis, has gained support from major music industry players, including Warner Music Group, Sony Music, and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Warner Music Group CEO Robert Kyncl stated that the NO FAKES Act is necessary to ensure AI innovation progresses responsibly while preserving the rights of artists and creators.

The proposed act is a response to growing concerns over AI-generated content that replicates artists' voices and likenesses without consent, posing risks to both the creative industry and consumer trust. If passed, the NO FAKES Act would mark a significant step toward establishing clearer legal boundaries for AI technology in the entertainment industry.
