Youthtown Songwriting 2021

Thursday 28 January 2021

The 2021 Youthtown Songwriting Competition Aotearoa is back for 2021. Write your own original song and enter it into one of two divisions:

Voice Of Our Youth – Write a song that portrays Life as a teenager in Aotearoa New Zealand

Give It A Go – Write an Upbeat song that inspires and encourages the ambitions of young New Zealanders.

The 2021 Youthtown Songwriting Competition Aotearoa is a competition run by Play It Strange in partnership with Youthtown for Year 9 to 11, in three different specified regions.

Sixteen songs will be chosen from each of the three regions to be professionally recorded. Those regions are:

Region one:  Northland and Auckland.

Region two: Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu, Wanganui and Wellington.

Region three: South Island.

This is a chance for you to have your original song recorded in a professional recording studio. Entries close on Friday, April 23, 2021.

This competition celebrates and embraces the voice of our youth through song – shared with schools, community, whanau, peers and the wider music community.

Sixteen song finalists will be chosen from each area – eight in each division. Songwriters of these 48 songs will then enjoy the experience of having their song recorded in a professional recording studio in their region. All songs will be mastered for the 2021 Youthtown Songwriting Competition Aotearoa Album.

The overall winner in each category will be invited to perform at the 2021 Play It Strange Awards held in December 2021.
