Warner Bros. announces release date for Beetlejuice 2
Wednesday 10 May 2023
Warner Bros. has set a release date of September 6, 2024, for the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice. The film is set to begin production in London starting tomorrow, with Tim Burton reteaming with Michael Keaton for the project.
Jenna Ortega, known for her role in the TV show Wednesday, is also attached to the film, which features a script by Mike Vukadinovich. Earlier drafts were written by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, who are also producing the movie.
Beetlejuice 2 is set to follow in the footsteps of other horror blockbusters released by Warner Bros. in the post-Labor Day spot, such as the It franchise, which grossed $1.17 billion, and The Nun, which remains the highest-grossing title in The Conjuring universe with $365.5 million. This year, Warner Bros. will release The Nun 2 on September 8.
The original Beetlejuice starred Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Jones, and Catherine O'Hara. It followed the spirits of a deceased couple who hire a malicious spirit in Beetlejuice to drive out an unbearable family that has moved into their home.
In addition to the upcoming film, a Broadway musical based on the original movie was produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures in 2019. While it closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic on March 10, 2020, it later reopened on April 8, 2022, and ran until January 8, 2023. A U.S. tour began last December.
